Co-op Media Network (CMN) are the largest media owner in convenience retail.

Co-op is one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives, with interests in food, funerals, insurance, and legal services. It is owned by millions of UK consumers.

Their nationwide network has an extensive media reach with circa 2,400 stores – one in every UK postcode.

Challenges

CMN was looking to enhance its retail media presence through a strategic expansion of digital displays at Co-op store entrances to provide additional opportunities for FMCG brands to increase engagement with customers as they enter stores and outside with passersby. This initiative demanded a comprehensive solution that would address several critical requirements.

From a technical perspective, the project required displays of superior quality and brightness to ensure messages are easy to read in direct sunlight while maintaining energy efficiency. Given the high-traffic locations of these installations, it was essential that the hardware was robust.

Operational efficiency posed another significant challenge. Due to varying store layouts and window sizes nationally, versatile mounting solutions were required to fit a range of spaces while keeping a uniform look across stores. Additionally, sustainable supply chain management and rapid response capability were crucial.

Ethical compliance represented a fundamental requirement, with strict adherence to Co-op’s ethical trading standards. Full supply chain transparency and compliance with environmental and labour regulations were non-negotiable elements of the partnership.

After a rigorous tender process evaluating multiple vendors, LamasaTech, in partnership with transformation specialists Commercial, emerged as the preferred hardware supplier due to our comprehensive approach to meeting these challenges.

Solution

LamasaTech supplied digital displays for 300 initial strategic locations, with plans to expand to 1,000 locations.

Commercial efficiently managed the complex installation and infrastructure plans with the displays installed across store entrances, foyers, and windows.

The solution featured Muro window displays with 3,500 nits ultra-high brightness capability and Versi displays equipped with anti-glare toughened glass. These screens have superior brightness compared to market alternatives but consume significantly less energy.

The mounting system facilitated quick, flexible display installation, enabling modular delivery and assembly that adapts to diverse store requirements while reducing logistical complexity and carbon emissions.

LamasaTech has a Bronze medal rating from EcoVadis, demonstrating our commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and meeting the Co-op’s stringent ethical standards.

LamasaTech’s built-in system-on-chip simplified deployment, without the need for additional signage players, and allows easy remote content updates across all screens.

Results

This strategic initiative has positioned CMN at the forefront of retail media innovation, creating new opportunities for FMCG brands to connect with their target audience while driving measurable results.

Before this rollout, in July 2024, the Co-op reported an immediate positive sales impact from its retail media, and indicated this could lead to longer-term incremental sales uplifts for brands – of up to four times the amount of the immediate sales.

The addition of LamasaTech screens allows brands to grab the attention of consumers as they enter the store. The displays are reliable, eye-catching and energy efficient.

CMN expects brands to see a positive ROI from advertising on the new front-of-store displays and better brand recall from consumers.
